Former President Donald Trump confirmed he had a phone conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin to discuss a potential resolution to the ongoing war in Ukraine, as reported by The New York Post. This marks the first known direct contact between Putin and a U.S. president since early 2022.
Trump, who has repeatedly pledged to bring an end to the conflict, hinted that progress had been made, calling the situation in Ukraine a "bloodbath." Speaking aboard Air Force One on Friday, Trump refrained from providing specific details about the number of discussions with Putin, saying, "I better not say."
"He [Putin] wants to see people stop dying," Trump stated, underscoring the urgency of finding a resolution.
The White House declined to comment on the report outside regular business hours. However, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked to TASS that there are “many different communications emerging,” though he did not confirm or deny the specifics of Trump and Putin’s talks.
Peskov’s statement reflects the cautious stance of the Kremlin, as speculation continues to swirl around potential peace negotiations.
The war in Ukraine began in 2014 following the Maidan Revolution, which ousted a pro-Russian Ukrainian president. This led to Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the rise of separatist movements in eastern Ukraine.
The conflict escalated significantly in 2022 when Putin launched a full-scale military operation, citing the protection of Russian-speaking populations and concerns over Ukraine's potential NATO membership. Western nations, led by the United States, have condemned the invasion as an unprovoked land grab and have pledged continued support for Ukraine.
Trump, the author of The Art of the Deal, has consistently expressed his desire to end the war. He has suggested a willingness to meet with both Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy to negotiate peace, though specifics on timing and location remain unclear.
Sources indicate that Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates are being considered as potential venues for a Trump-Putin summit. Meanwhile, reports from Russian officials suggest preparations for such a meeting are already in advanced stages, potentially taking place as early as February or March.
In June 2024, Putin laid out conditions for peace, including Ukraine dropping its NATO aspirations and withdrawing its forces from regions claimed by Russia. However, any resolution would likely involve complex negotiations, with both sides holding firm on critical issues.
Throughout his career, Trump has maintained that he has a "good relationship" with Putin, a dynamic he believes can be leveraged to bring about an end to the war. While he declined to disclose specifics, Trump emphasized his commitment to halting the bloodshed, stating, "Every day people are dying. I want to end this damn thing."
As preparations for potential peace talks continue, Trump remains confident in his ability to broker a deal that could bring much-needed relief to Ukraine and the region.
