The Neuroscience of Stress and Communication: Lessons from Magda Tabac

In one of my 2024 Love Learning You podcast episodes, I had the privilege of speaking with certified Neuromindfulness™ expert, trainer, and coach Magda Tabac. As someone deeply invested in the intersection of neuroscience, stress management, and communication, Magda’s journey and insights offer powerful tools for anyone navigating personal or professional challenges.

I've compiled some key takeaways from our conversation:

1. The Path from Burnout to Purpose

Magda’s journey began in corporate life, where a demanding career eventually led to burnout. This pivotal moment forced her to re-evaluate her purpose and sparked her transition into neuroscience, emotional assertiveness, and stress management training. Her story reminds us of the importance of tuning into our inner needs and aligning our work with what truly fulfills us.

Key Lesson: Burnout often arises when we neglect our emotional and mental well-being. Recognizing and addressing misalignment in our lives can lead to transformative growth.

2. Understanding the Role of Emotions

Magda introduced us to the concept of emotional assertiveness, which emphasizes identifying and expressing authentic emotions like happiness, sadness, anger, and fear. Mismanagement of emotions can lead to communication breakdowns, both at work and in personal relationships.

Try This Strategy: Use a Wheel of Emotions to name your feelings throughout the day. This exercise helps reconnect the logical part of your brain (neocortex) with your emotional state, enabling better decision-making during stressful situations.

3. The Neuroscience of Stress

Stress affects how we communicate, think, and relate to others. Magda’s work in applied neuroscience provides tools to manage stress by understanding its biological effects. She highlights the importance of self-awareness in recognizing our triggers and taking proactive steps to regulate our responses.

Actionable Tip: Set daily reminders to pause and assess your emotional state. Acknowledge your feelings without judgment and decide how to move forward constructively. I started doing this after our conversation and the PRESENCE with my emotions has been both fruitful and challenging at times!

4. Enhancing Communication Through Self-Awareness

As a certified Process Communication Model® (PCM) trainer, Magda helps individuals and organizations improve communication by understanding personality types and perceptual differences. This model empowers teams to navigate conflicts, foster inclusivity, and appreciate diverse perspectives.

Pro Insight: When faced with workplace tension, consider the perceptual frame of the person you’re communicating with. Are they approaching the conversation through logic, emotion, or values? Adjusting your approach can break barriers and build trust.

5. Cultivating Joy and Connection

At the heart of Magda’s work lies a deep commitment to fostering joy and connection. Her strategies encourage us to approach life and relationships with curiosity and compassion. Whether through stress management, emotional awareness, or mindfulness, Magda’s message is clear: true growth begins with self-awareness.
