I owned a care company for 15 years. I built it from nothing to a thriving agency that was the No1 Provider in my area. At one point I had 120 Care workers and a multi million pound business. But it wasn't always a success story.
For many years I struggled with my business. I was deeply unhappy, unhealthy and underpaid. My staff ran the business whilst I buried my head in the sand. I was bullied, walked over and completely taken advantage of. My Life was so bad I was rushed to hospital with a suspected heart attack.
It was then I knew things had to change, I had to take control. I ended up getting rid of my manager and looked for better staff. I learned to become a better leader and set visions and targets. I learned about business & marketing to build a better company. I hired coaches to help me and read many business books.
I went from stressed out to in control and it was actually quite easy. My coach could see things I couldn't and advise me on what to do. I knew I was at risk of losing everything so I did what he said. As things got better my company became a great place to work. Staff were happy, I was happy and the clients got a better service as a consequence.
Everything seemed to get better overnight but in reality it was years of frustration and pain that led me to that moment of change. The sad thing is, it doesn't have to be that way. The sadder thing is, for many home care providers it is.
Most clients I take on are in the same position as I was. They are burned out and in financial trouble. The work they have is local authority work and the margins are tight. When they don't get paid cash flow keeps them up at night.

The chances are, many of you still reading are feeling the same. Some of you will have great businesses that are thriving but most won't. Most will be struggling. But here is a question I always ask a new client who doubts they can turn things around……..'Do you know any care companies you want to be like'?
The answer is usually ‘Yes’
and my reply is ‘If they can do it, lets copy them’ because that is the secret sauce. All we have to do is find people who have achieved what we want and copy them. Home Care isn't rocket science, it's easy to copy someone else and get it right.
